Marin City is a small unincorporated community in Southern Marin. It sits just north of Sausalito and west of Highway 101, between Sausalito and Mill Valley. Because it isn’t incorporated, the County of Marin provides its local government, and residents use a Sausalito mailing address and ZIP code (94965).
Marin City was built during World War II to house workers at the Marinship shipyard in Sausalito, which produced Liberty ships and tankers. After the war it became home to one of Marin’s most established Black communities and includes the Golden Gate Village public housing development. Today the community also includes newer condominiums and townhomes and The Gateway shopping center.
For real estate purposes, Marin City is one of the more affordable entry points into Southern Marin. It offers the same quick access to the Golden Gate Bridge as Sausalito and Mill Valley, at a lower price point.
